Case 02 · Tax advisory
AI competence and governance across the entire company
From understanding the technology to strategic preparation.
Strategic Tension Innovation ↔ Governance
01 Starting point
A tax advisory firm faced the question of how generative AI could be integrated sensibly into everyday work. At the same time, data protection, regulatory requirements and the responsible handling of sensitive client data had to be taken into account.
For management, one thing was clear: AI should not remain a topic only for a few tech-savvy employees. The whole team should understand which opportunities AI opens up, where risks arise and how the new technologies can be used responsibly.
02 Strategic tension
InnovationGovernance
OpennessSecurity
The leadership question How do we enable broad use of AI across the company without losing sight of responsibility, data protection and governance?
On the one hand, employees were meant to get to know new AI possibilities, try them out and develop their own fields of application. On the other hand, a tax advisory firm works with particularly sensitive information. Data protection, clear guardrails and a shared understanding of what is possible with AI – and what is not – were therefore essential prerequisites.
03 Intervention
- 3-hour AI workshop for all employees
- Their own topics and fields of application
- Looking at opportunities and risks
- Strategic assessment
This was about more than transferring knowledge. Employees brought their own questions and concrete topics from their everyday work and explored where AI can support their work and which limits and risks need to be considered.
In parallel, the strategic implications were examined with management: What opportunities arise for the business model? Which risks need to be actively managed? What organizational and technological prerequisites are required?
04 Decision
Treat AI not as an isolated tool topic, but anchor it strategically.
Management decided to treat AI as a strategic development of the firm. This includes in particular the question of how AI can be meaningfully connected to existing core systems and processes – such as payroll and accounting – and integrated into the firm’s future strategy.
05 Result
A shared foundation for working with AI.
Employees can assess and contribute their own fields of application on a more solid basis. Management has gained a clearer picture of the opportunities, risks and strategic tensions and is aligning its further AI strategy accordingly. A technology and compliance topic has become a shared leadership and organizational task.
AI competence does not come from individual employees mastering new tools. It emerges when leadership, employees, governance and strategic direction work together.
