Strategic Tension Existing ↔ New

  1. 01 Starting point

The commercial service providers of Upper Austria bring together 18 different industries – with different business models, structures, experience and prerequisites for using AI.

As the person responsible for the AI transformation, my first question was: What does AI change for these industries – and how can we create orientation early without hastily throwing proven practices overboard?

  2. 02 Strategic tension

    ExistingNew

    The leadership question

How do we open 18 different industries to new possibilities through AI without ignoring their established structures, experience and specific requirements?

In established industries especially, the speed of technological development meets established structures, proven ways of working and very different starting situations. The key was to create a shared framework in which each industry can assess the relevance of AI for its own situation.

  3. 03 Intervention

    1. Analysis of existing initiatives by other trade groups and federal states
    2. Raising awareness among the trade group chairs
    3. Joint assessment
    4. Development of a support and learning structure

Perception: AI initiatives and offerings by other trade groups and federal states were analyzed. Positioning: In a committee meeting, the chairs of the 18 trade groups were made aware of the topic, and its significance for the different industries was assessed together. Preparation: What structures are needed so that companies gain access to relevant knowledge, training and the exchange of experience?

  4. 04 Decision

A shared infrastructure instead of isolated individual measures.

A central AI One Stop Shop bundles current AI training offerings, dates of the AI tour in Upper Austria, funding opportunities and other relevant information. In addition, a community of practice was established: managing directors meet every two months on a specific AI topic and share experiences and real use cases.

  5. 05 Result

    A lasting cross-industry learning structure.

Relevant information is accessible in one place, experiences are shared and mistakes are not made more than once. Guests from outside the original 18 industries now take part as well.

What this example shows

Transformation does not mean replacing tradition with innovation. The leadership task is to open up new possibilities while productively involving existing experience, structures and identities.
